How to Create a Symbaloo Account

How to Create a Symbaloo Account

What is Symbaloo?

Symbaloo is an online bookmarking tool that is visually appealing in an easily managed way.  An excellent resource for webquests, as an add-on to your teacher website, or an easy way to share online resources.

This document is broken into the following sections:
  1. How do you open an account?
  2. How do you create a webmix?
  3. How do you create a tile
  4. How do you share a webmix
  5. How do you create a background or wallpaper?
  6. How do you create a symbaloo homepage?
  7. How do you search for other webmixes?
  8. How do you import a tile from another webmix?

Here is an excellent video that explains most of the above sections:

  • How do you open an account?
    • Click on “Create an Account Now”
    • You can create an account using:
      • Facebook
      • Google plus account
      • Registering your email

  • Creating a webmix

    • A webmix is the page you see on symbaloo that contains all of your tiles (bookmarks)
    • To get started, click on the plus sign at the top of the page:

  • You will get a choice of either:
    • Creating your own webmix
    • Searching for a webmix

  • Let’s start by creating your own

    • Name your webmix

  • Here’s what your screen should look like:

  • Add a tile

    • Click on one of the tiles and you will see the following:

    • “Create” a tile allows you to create your own bookmark
    • “Search” a tile lets you find a tile that is already created (like netflix, pandora, cnn, etc)

    • Let’s Create a tile for “Q” (CNUSD's online attendance tool)

    • Here’s what I put together

  • If you click save you will see this:

  • You can click and drag the tile anywhere on the page if you want to place it somewhere else
  • If you right click on the tile, you will see this:

  • You can edit, copy/move the tile or delete it.

Sharing a webmix

  • Click on the sharing icon at the top:

  • At this point you will see this screen:
  • You can make the symbaloo available publicly or privately

  • Once you click on “Share My Webmix” you will get this screen:
  • You can:
    • Write the website address on the board
    • Embed it on your website
    • Send it out via REMIND

Create a background/Wallpaper

Go to options

Select “Change Wallpaper”

Click on the wallpaper you would like to use

Set as your homepage:

  • Click on the “envelope” icon at the top of the page

  • You will see this screen

  • When you click on “Set Symbaloo as your homepage!” you will see this:
  • Follow the instructions above

Searching for other webmixes:

This is pretty cool, you can search for other webmixes that people have produced.  Here’s how you do it.

  • At the top right of the page, do a search for webmixes
  • (In my example, I looked for ESL webmixes)

If I click on the second one, I will see the following:

You can see that 346 users connect to this webmix and it is rated five stars.  I can choose to add it to my symbaloo account by going to the bottom of the page and clicking on “add this webmix”

This will take you back to your home page, the webmixes that you have selected will appear across the top of the page:

  • At this point, you can use the entire webmix as a source or you can select certain tiles to add to your own webmix
  • Right click on the tile

  • Go to Copy/Move and you will see this screen:

  • A few things about this screen:
    • You can click on the arrow next to “Home” and select a webmix to receive the tile
    • Either copy or move the tile
    • Click on “Move tile”
